Job description: Lawrence Berkeley National Labs ( ) Scientific Networking Division has an opening for a Network Operations Engineer to join the team.
In this exciting role, you will provide front-line support for the ESnet network. ESnet, the Energy Sciences Network, is a high speed network serving thousands of Department of Energy scientists and collaborators, and a global leader in developing and operating high performance network services. ESnet provides DOE scientists with comprehensive connectivity to the global Internet and high bandwidth access to DOE sites and primary science collaborators, including research and education (R&E) networks in the US, Europe, Asia Pacific, and elsewhere. The NOC Engineer role works for the ESnet Network Operations Center (NOC) and serves as the primary point of contact between ESnet engineers, DOE sites and vendors to provide initial network diagnoses and early problem resolution.
What You Will Do, at Level 1:
Will have responsibility for performing ESnet’s incident management processes. This includes observing alarms, managing incident tickets, sending notifications, triaging outages and escalating to the appropriate parties when required.
Reliable attendance for scheduled shifts including providing advance notice of absences when possible.
Act as the primary external communicator for ESnet operational issues, including receiving requests and questions from ESnet sites, contacting carriers and peers to report problems and communicating network status to the wider ESnet community. Maintain a professional and courteous manner in all communications.
Interface with ESnet support resources outside of the NOC team (e.g. security, optical NOC, etc.)
Coordinate scheduled ESnet maintenance, including performing impact analysis and sending notifications.
Facilitate remote-hands work at offsite ESnet locations, including coordinating with vendors and managing shipping and receiving of required hardware.
Assist in managing ESnet equipment inventory.
Assist with hands-on equipment work required on-site at Berkeley Lab such as power-cycling equipment and replacing hardware.
Work on and solve problems of moderate scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors.
In addition to above, Level 2:
Identify and propose opportunities for process improvement and automation.
Work on and resolve problems of diverse scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors.
Participate widely in team discussions and share opinions in areas where a group decision is required
Provide mentorship to early career or newer staff
Demonstrate subject matter expertise in at least one area of operational relevance (e.g. optical support, security, etc.)
Demonstrate good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
Network with senior internal and external personnel in own area of expertise.
What is Required at Level 1:
Typically requires a Bachelors degree or 2 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Understanding of common networking protocols, including IPv4, IPv6, BGP and STP.
Knowledge and experience using the command line on networking switches and routers, such as Cisco and Juniper.
Knowledge and experience using the command line shell on Unix-based systems such as Linux or FreeBSD as well as basic system administration tasks such as checking logs, restarting services and rebooting servers.
Ability to work effectively as part of a cross-disciplinary team and contribute to a project teams effort.
Ability to work and participate in an on-call rotation, including overnight, weekends and occasional holidays.
Ability to work with a highly distributed and remote team.
Ability to travel domestically to occasional team retreats and other work-related events
Ability to convey a strong presence, professional image, and deal confidently with complex technical problems.
Ability to anticipate problems, resolve ambiguity and take decisive action.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with team members, vendors and support personnel of all levels.
In addition to above, Level 2:
Typically requires a Bachelors degree or 5 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Demonstrated expertise in at least two of the following technology areas: optical networking, routed networking, layer2 transport technologies, security, facilities management, monitoring or measurement tools, or process management
Entry level certification in at least one of ESnets primary vendor platforms or technology areas

This is a full time, 2 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.
Level 1: This full salary range of this position is between $7,050 to $11,897 per month and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $7,931 to $9,695 per month depending upon candidates’ full skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.
Level 2: This full salary range of this position is between $8,883 to $14,990 per month and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $9,992 to $12,215 per month depending upon candidates’ full skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.

This position is eligible for remote work. Remote workers are defined as individuals that reside in the United States, but 150 miles away from Berkeley Lab. There may be an expectation to intermittently conduct work, attend meetings and training on site at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Work schedules are dependent on business needs.
