As part of the Foster Success team, the Program Coordinator – Youth Engagement will advance the organizations mission by assisting teens and young adults who have experienced foster care learn the skills needed to advocate for themselves and for the betterment of child welfare systems. The Coordinator will work with staff to assist in the overall coordination of services and opportunities in alignment of the organizations mission and values of authentic youth engagement, building community, equitable practices that promote racial equity, diversity and inclusion, and strengths-based practice. A successful person in this role should be able to authentically engage youth in meetings, events, and other decision making opportunities. They are able to make meaningful connections with program participants and encourage engagement/participation in future opportunities. This position requires proficiency in organization, data collection/entry, calendar/schedule management, and an understanding of the Indiana Child Welfare System.
The Coordinator reports to the Assistant Director of Youth Engagement. This position may be remote anywhere within the state of Indiana. If not located in Central Indiana, frequent travel to the Indianapolis office, with some overnight stays, will be required. This position will travel to various locations within Indiana approximately 50% of the time.
Primary Responsibilities
50% Youth Support – Conduct outreach to recruit young people with lived experience in foster care to participate in opportunities and programming. Conduct initial and ongoing training for young people on various topics (i.e., leadership development, effective partnerships with adults, public speaking, and self advocacy). Provide ongoing support, guidance, and coaching to young people engaged in opportunities and programming, including scheduling assistance, preparation for speaking engagements, and coordinating debrief sessions. Prepare young people for speaking engagements, coordinate participation stipends, and provide adult supporters with best practices to engage program participants.
40% Program Support – Mange the day-to-day operations of the Indiana Youth Advisory Board (IYAB) based on the contract and related Service Standards. This includes, but is not limited to, scheduling IYAB Regional Meetings and arranging logistics in support of IYAB members; working with young people and the Youth Engagement team to develop agenda items, coordinate technology for all Zoom meetings. Provide support and oversight to youth board members both locally and when traveling to in-state and out-of-state events, functions, conferences, etc. Assist in the coordination of the annual youth conference with the young leaders and youth engagement staff. Collaborate with IYAB Leaders and NYTD Ambassadors on content creation and implementation for the Youth Engagement Newsletter and social media.
10% Data Reporting and Tracking – Use internal data collection tools to track, monitor, and report grant and contract outcomes. Develop systems for collecting feedback from participating youth through the use of questionnaires, annual youth surveys and/or youth focus groups in order to constantly improve program effectiveness. Assist the Assistant Director of Youth Engagement in writing quarterly and annual reports as required by state guidelines.
Position Requirements
Bachelors degree OR 4 years of full-time experience working with individuals affected by foster care. A degree in any of the following disciplines is preferred: Education, Social Work, Human Development, or a related field. Previous work experience in child welfare is preferred.
Demonstrated success in the areas of youth and young adult 1:1 support, advocacy, education/training, program implementation.
Proven creative problem-solving techniques, openness to change and desire for continual feedback, and an ability to adapt in a rapidly evolving environment
Ability to take initiative and work autonomously as needed to achieve departmental goals
Ability to represent Foster Success with senior-level partners, agencies, and elected officials.
