MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university and two (2) years of experience in computer systems analysis, computer programming or in planning or designing distributed computer systems; or

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the computer sciences or in management information systems and one (1) year experience in computer systems analysis, computer programming or in planning or designing distributed computer systems; or

A master’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the computer sciences or in management information systems; or

Three (3) years of experience as described above and either (1) completion of a 720 classroom hour program of study from a vocational/technical school or accredited community college in an area of data processing (excluding data entry), or (2) 60 semester or 90 quarter hours of college course work from an accredited institution which includes four courses in computer science or management information systems.

Experience as described above can be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required college education.

Completion of a one-year program of study from a vocational/technical school in an area of data processing (excluding data entry) can substitute for one year of the required experience.

Requires possession of a valid Class E driver license.

JOB DUTIES:

This is work installing, configuring, and supporting an organization’s desktop computers, printers, and peripherals. Incumbents maintain computer hardware and software, monitor computers to ensure computer availability to all system users and perform necessary maintenance to support computer availability. Incumbents may also assist other computer support specialists to plan, coordinate, and implement computer upgrades.

Provides hardware/desktop support through technical support and assistance to division users, including remote users, of microcomputers and network communications. Includes, but is not limited to: installs and performs minor repairs to hardware, software and peripheral equipment following design or installation specifications; enters commands and observes system functioning to verify correct operations and detect errors; inspects equipment and reads order sheets to prepare for delivery to users; provides authoritative information or advise on computer systems and programs for problem resolutions; uses program development techniques that create the most logical and efficient approach based on user needs and hardware characteristics. Supports remote users with applications, broadband, cable and Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) broadband and Virtual Private Network (VPN) usage. Uses imaging software to load the division’s Windows 11 image onto new laptops for deployment. Uses this image to restore corrupt systems or to replace hard drives, as needed. Configures imaged drives with the user’s account and ships them to the requested location.

Confers with staff, users and management to determine requirements for new systems or modifications. Tests and monitors software, hardware and peripheral equipment to evaluate use, effectiveness and adequacy of product for user. Prepares evaluations of software and hardware and submits recommendations to management for review. Refers major hardware or software problems or defective products to vendors or technicians for service.

Maintains record of daily data communication transactions, problems and remedial action taken, and installation activities. Reads trade magazines and technical manuals, maintains relations with hardware and software providers, and attends conferences and seminars, as required, to maintain knowledge of hardware and software. Works with developers and business managers to assure business needs are met. Assists developers with testing new/changer applications, features, bug fixes, etc. Provides support to the State Hemp Program. Some tasks may require evening, weekend and/or holiday activity, including overnight and/or extended travel.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of computer hardware, operating systems, MS Office Suite applications and information technology systems in general.
  • Knowledge of the principles that promote effective quality control.
  • Knowledge of applications development and deployment in a web-based environment.
  • Knowledge of installing front end tools used to develop applications in an Oracle database.
  • Ability to provide technical and instructional assistance to personal computer and application users.
  • Ability to define and analyze end user’s needs, and configure a system to satisfy the needs.
  • Skilled in the principles that promote effective support of users.
  • Skilled in written and verbal communications.
  • Skilled in managing small projects.
