Your Opportunity

We are looking for a part-time biological/botany intern to support our environmental services team of scientists, engineers, planners and other environmental professionals in our Gulf Coast business unit, in the Fort Myers, Florida office. This position will be for 1-3 full days a week based on your schedule/availability.

As a part-time biological intern, you will be part of a team conducting various field studies throughout Florida. You will assist Stantec biologists/ecologists with field data collection for a wide array of studies which may include exotic species treatment assessments, listed species surveys, aquatic resources delineations, habitat/land use characterization, and water quality monitoring. You will also support/assist in collecting desktop data from online publicly available sources and will provide assistance in preparing reports/permit applications for submittal to clients and regulatory agencies.

Our working environments are highly variable, with regular work in settings raging from urban locations (e.g., roadsides and city streets) to remote undeveloped areas and include working outside for extended amounts of time in a variety of terrain and weather conditions.

As part of the team, this position will provide you the opportunity to work in remote and scenic environments and contribute to meaningful restoration, monitoring, and pre-construction projects in a variety of industries.

Your Key Responsibilities

Identifying native and exotic species in southwest Florida

Assist in assessing exotic species treatment success

Supporting wetland delineations.

Assist with wildlife surveys and habitat assessments for listed species.

Support efforts to characterize upland habitats and land use types.

Record, enter, organize, manage, and analyze data.

Assist in the preparation of report documentation and supporting materials for client and regulatory agency submittals.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

Interest and ability to identify native and invasive plants in southwest Florida.

Botanical background preferred.

Previous field experience and skills in an applicable science/discipline (e.g., ecology, botany, wetland science, soil science, wetland science) strongly preferred.

Ability to work well independently and with a diverse, multidisciplinary team.

Available for 1-3 full days a week, as needed.

Self-motivated with strong initiative.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Superb observation skills and strong attention to detail.

Ability to tolerate working across a range of south Florida habitats under a range of warm/hot remote conditions.

Must have the willingness to learn new skills while conducting field work in rural wilderness settings.

Must demonstrate a strong commitment to safety and exhibit that they possess the tools to promote safe behavior.

Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word.

Experience with GPS and digital field collection equipment is a plus.

First Aid/CPR training preferred.

Must have a good driving record and valid driver’s license.

Experience operating field vehicles (e.g., 4-wheel drive trucks, all-terrain vehicles, and boats) is a plus

Willingness to travel and conduct field work in potentially remote areas for extended periods (up to 50% of the time) including overnight travel is expected for this position. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.

Education and Experience

The ideal candidate will have at minimum, a high school diploma and working on a bachelor’s degree in an environmental discipline (Biology, Ecology, Natural Resources, Wetland ecology, or related natural resources field). Work experience in an outdoor setting involving rigorous physical activity. 0-2 years of experience collecting biological data in a field setting. Must have a basic understanding of biological principles and proficiency in use of word processing and spreadsheet computer software. Experience with ESRI’s Field Maps and hand-held GPS units or other similar GPS-based survey and data collection equipment is a plus.

Position will work in both a field and office setting. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Must be available to travel for out-of-town projects when needed.
